How to tie a tie

Here are step-by-step instructions for tying a simple and popular tie knot, the Four-in-Hand Knot

 1. Start with the wide end on your right.

The narrow end should rest slightly above your belly button (this will vary depending on your height and the length of the tie).

 2. Cross the wide end over the narrow end.

The wide end should be over the narrow end to your left.

 3. Loop the wide end underneath the narrow end.

Pull the wide end under the narrow end to the right.

 4. Bring the wide end across the front again.

Cross it back over the narrow end to the left.

 5. Pull the wide end up through the loop.

Bring the wide end up through the loop between your collar and the tie.

 6. Tuck the wide end through the front knot.

Pull the wide end down through the knot in front.

 7. Tighten and adjust.

Hold the narrow end and slide the knot up toward your collar. Adjust the knot as needed for a neat appearance.

This method creates a slightly asymmetrical knot that is suitable for most occasions. If you're looking for a larger, more formal knot, you could try the Windsor Knot or Half-Windsor Knot, which have slightly more steps.
